China's digital ecosystem is different from the rest of the world — Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Uber don't work. Here's what you need instead.
📱 Important: Download and set up these apps BEFORE you arrive in China.
1. WeChat (微信) — The Everything App
Essential for messaging, payments, and more. Register with your phone number and link a credit card. WeChat Pay is accepted everywhere in China.
2. Alipay (支付宝) — Payment Alternative
Like WeChat Pay, accepted almost everywhere. Has a "Tour Pass" feature for international travelers to pre-load money without a Chinese bank account.
3. DiDi (滴滴出行) — Ride-Hailing
China's answer to Uber. Has an English interface. You can pay with Alipay or WeChat. Cheaper than taxis in most cities.
4. Baidu Maps (百度地图) — Navigation
Google Maps doesn't work well in China. Baidu Maps is the most detailed navigation app with an English version and public transit directions.
5. Trip.com (携程) — Travel Booking
Best app for booking trains, flights, and hotels. Has full English interface and accepts international credit cards.
6. Pleco — Chinese Dictionary
Best Chinese-English dictionary app. Works offline, has camera translation. Essential for reading menus and signs.
7. VPN — Access the Internet
For access to Google, Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp. Install and test before you leave home.
