Best Time to Visit Gansu
Best May–Oct. Danxia is vivid after rain; autumn (Sep–Oct) is ideal for both Gannan and the desert. Summer is hot in Dunhuang (35°C+). Winter is cold and quiet.
Gansu Travel Tips
- Mogao tickets: Buy 1–3 weeks ahead in high season; same-day tickets often sell out. We book as part of the itinerary.
- Danxia timing: Sunset is best; the park also opens at dawn for photography. Combine with an early start from Zhangye city.
- Gannan altitude: Xiahe is 2,900m, Langmusi 3,300m — go gently, drink water. Nights are cold even in summer.
- Distances: Lanzhou–Zhangye is ~500km, Zhangye–Dunhuang ~600km. We plan 300–450km days and suggest the odd internal flight to save time.
