Do I need to book Mogao Caves tickets in advance?
Yes, Mogao Caves tickets MUST be booked in advance (up to 7 days ahead) at the official website. Tickets cost ¥238 per person and include 2 movies + 8 caves. During peak season (May-October), tickets sell out quickly. We can assist with the booking process. Emergency tickets (¥100, 4 caves) may be available same-day but are not guaranteed.
How many days do I need in Dunhuang?
We recommend 2 full days: Day 1 - Mogao Caves (morning) + Singing Sand Dunes & Crescent Lake (afternoon/sunset); Day 2 - Western line: Yumen Pass + Yardang National Geopark (sunset is spectacular). One day is possible but you would miss the western line, which is essential for the full Silk Road experience.
What is the best time to visit Dunhuang?
Summer (June-August) is the peak season with long days and warm evenings, but temperatures can reach 38°C (100°F). Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer more comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds. Winter is cold but very quiet. The Singing Sand Dunes are best visited in late afternoon to avoid the heat and catch the sunset.
Can I combine Dunhuang with Zhangye Danxia?
Yes, a classic Silk Road itinerary includes Dunhuang + Jiayuguan + Zhangye. Dunhuang to Jiayuguan is 4 hrs by car/train, Jiayuguan to Zhangye is 2.5 hrs. Zhangye's Rainbow Mountains (Danxia) are a must-see. A 3-day tour covering all three starts from $400. High-speed trains connect these cities, but a private car offers more flexibility for photo stops.
Is it safe to visit the Yardang Geopark?
Yes, it is safe but remote. Yardang (also called "Ghost City") is 180 km west of Dunhuang, near the Xinjiang border. The landscape features wind-eroded rock formations that resemble city ruins. We recommend going with an experienced driver (our drivers know the area well) and carrying enough water. Sunset at Yardang is unforgettable - the golden light makes the formations glow.
