Must-See Attractions in Lijiang

Lijiang Old Town

Lijiang Old Town

A UNESCO World Heritage Site with 800+ years of history. The town features an ingenious ancient water system, cobblestone streets, and traditional Naxi wooden houses. Sifang Street is the central square.

Admission: Free (maintenance fee ¥50) | Duration: 3-4 hours | Tips: Explore the maze of canals and bridges. The water wheels at the entrance are iconic. Visit Mu Palace (¥40) for Naxi royal history. The town is magical at night with red lanterns reflecting in the canals.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

A sacred mountain of the Naxi people, with 13 peaks reaching up to 5,596 meters. The glacier park at 4,680 meters offers year-round snow. The lower meadows feature the beautiful Blue Moon Valley.

Admission: ¥100 + cable car ¥120-200 | Duration: Full day | Tips: Take the cable car to Glacier Park (4,680m) — bring warm clothes and oxygen canisters (available at base). The Blue Moon Valley (¥20 eco-vehicle) has stunning turquoise lakes. Acclimatize in Lijiang (2,400m) for a day before ascending.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge

One of the world's deepest gorges, carved by the Jinsha River between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Mountain. The river drops 200 meters over a series of rapids through the 15-km gorge.

Admission: ¥65 | Duration: 4-6 hours | Tips: The upper trail has the best views. The middle section is the most dramatic. For hikers, the 2-day high trail is one of China's best treks. The road to the gorge is winding — our experienced drivers know it well.

Baisha Village

Baisha Village

The original settlement of the Naxi people before Lijiang Old Town was built. Features the famous Baisha Murals — Ming Dynasty paintings combining Buddhist, Taoist, and Lamaist art in a unique Naxi style.

Admission: ¥30 | Duration: 1-2 hours | Tips: The murals in Dabaoji Palace are the highlight — some date back 600 years. The village is much quieter than Lijiang Old Town. Local Naxi women sell handmade embroidery. Try a Naxi coffee at a village cafe.

Blue Moon Valley

Blue Moon Valley

A series of stunning turquoise lakes at the base of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, formed by glacial meltwater. The water's color changes with the light, from deep blue to emerald green.

Admission: Included in mountain ticket + ¥20 eco-vehicle | Duration: 1-2 hours | Tips: The four lakes (Yulong, Lanyue, Jiantan, and Tingtao) are connected by small waterfalls. The view with the snow mountain behind is one of China's most photographed scenes. Best in morning light.

Mu Palace

The former residence of the Mu family, who ruled Lijiang for 470 years as vassals of the Chinese emperors. The palace complex features beautiful architecture blending Naxi, Bai, and Han Chinese styles.

Admission: ¥40 | Duration: 1.5-2 hours | Tips: The palace was destroyed and rebuilt — the current structure is based on the original Ming Dynasty design. The view from the top pavilion over the Old Town is excellent. The Naxi cultural exhibits are informative.

Shuhe Ancient Town

A quieter alternative to Lijiang Old Town, once an important stop on the Tea Horse Caravan Route. Features traditional Naxi architecture, clear streams, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Admission: Free | Duration: 1-2 hours | Tips: Less crowded than Lijiang Old Town. The Sugo Bridge and Qinglong Bridge are highlights. The tea houses serve excellent Pu'er tea. A 30-minute walk from Lijiang Old Town.

Lugu Lake

A pristine alpine lake on the Yunnan-Sichuan border, home to the Mosuo people — one of the world's last matriarchal societies. The lake is surrounded by mountains and traditional villages.

Admission: ¥70 | Duration: Full day (2 days recommended) | Tips: 4 hours from Lijiang — best as an overnight trip. Take a pig-trough boat ride on the lake. Visit a Mosuo family to learn about their unique 'walking marriage' culture. The sunrise over the lake is unforgettable.

Black Dragon Pool

A scenic park with a famous view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the pool, framed by the Moon-Embracing Pavilion. One of China's most iconic photographs.

Admission: Free (park) / ¥50 (maintenance) | Duration: 1 hour | Tips: The classic photo spot — arrive early morning for the best reflection. The pool is fed by springs from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The Dongba Culture Museum nearby explains Naxi pictographic writing.

Dongba Culture Museum

A museum dedicated to the unique Dongba culture of the Naxi people, featuring the world's only living pictographic writing system. The Naxi Dongba script has over 1,400 characters.

Admission: ¥15 | Duration: 1 hour | Tips: The Naxi pictographic script is fascinating — one of the few pictographic writing systems still in use. The shamanic Dongba religious artifacts are unique. Buy a Dongba scroll as a souvenir.
